Aki Kaurismäki
Aki Kaurismäki was born in 1957 in Orimattila, Finland. Before making films, he worked as a waiter, as a dishwasher in a grand hotel, in a post office and even as a film critic for a Finnish film magazine: "I worked in many jobs before I got into this film nonsense." His films are known for their laconic and quirky yet down to earth aesthetic. He meets his heroes lovingly and never mockingly like so few directors of European cinema. In 1990 Aki Kaurismäki left Finland to live in Portugal with his wife. After three foreign productions he returns to his homeland in 1994 and decides to shoot only in Finland. Already in 2011, he seems to have forgotten his resolution and shoots Le Havre in the French port city of the same name. His masterpiece, THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE, is his first film set in Finland taking place in Helsinki’s asphalt jungle.
